Interview in The Star newspapers!

Hey there, I have safely arrived in Japan :)
Had an interview with The Star as I did a 14 day quarantine in Narita.

Cancer survivor starts a new chapter in Japan

KUALA LUMPUR: Cancer survivor, Amelia Tan, who has been battling the disease since she was 18, is starting on a new chapter in life after getting a post-graduate scholarship to study biological science in Japan.

Tan, 31, started a home-based business in 2009 after recovering from spinal metastasis that left her wheelchair-bound. "I was diagnosed with fourth stage lymphoma at 18 with the cancer already spreading to my spine.

"I was bedridden throughout my cancer treatment and out of sheer boredom, started playing with my mum's bead collection.

"This little pastime became an all-consuming passion and later on, when I learnt to sit up and transfer into a wheelchair on my own through intensive physiotherapy, I decided to sell my creations online, Tan said in an interview.

At a time her self-confidence was low, she said the anonymity of an online business was appealing.

"Selling online meant that I could work at my own pace and most importantly, nobody could see me.

"Nobody could avoid buying from me because I am in a wheelchair, and nobody could buy simply because I am in a wheelchair," said Tan, who is better known as Mei from the one-woman blogshop, Crafted By Mei.

With intricate, whimsical creations such as Misty, At The Bay and Juiced, Tan created a fairyland of artisan jewellery using crystal and bicone beads, pearls, a multitude of charms and the occasional Swarovski embellishment.

The business grew and Tan was kept busy with a steady stream of orders, but after three years, she hit a plateau.

"I had accomplished what I wanted with the business and felt that I was ready to move on. By then, I was a different person from when I was first disabled. I had come to terms with my disability and embraced my identity.

"I no longer see myself as wheel chair-bound, instead, I see the chair as an extension of myself," she said.

With a new zeal for life, Tan enrolled in Taylor's University in 2015 and obtained a Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Hons) with a 3.99 CGPA, while still running her jewellery business.

A stroke of luck led her to a scholarship offer advertised by the Japanese government just a few days before the closing date.

After nearly a year of interviews and selection stages during which she worked as a research assistant in Universiti Malaya and also fulfilled jewellery orders- Tan received the good news that she had been awarded the scholarship.

She was supposed to go to Japan in April last year.

Her departure was delayed until last month due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"In a way, this delay was a blessing in disguise as I had undergone surgeries and was on bed rest for six months.

"During that time, I enrolled online intensive Japanese lang course for beginners that came with the scholarship.

"While my master's programme will be conducted in English, I need to have a basic grasp of the language," she said.

During a two-week quarantine in Japan which she has just concluded, Tan had a bit of time to reflect on life.

"Everyone's different, but for me, it wasn't just about the physical part of it (being disabled), but it included a change in self-identity.

"Had I not felt ready when I went to university, I wouldn't have had such a good time then, which is why I am thankful that my family never pressured me to just move on with life".

"As for the future, I hope I will enjoy my research life here as well as being independent in a foreign country," Tan said, adding that her blogshop would be closed indefinitely while she is overseas.

Closed!

Hi there!
Crafted By Mei is now closed.
I am currently overseas for further studies, have been planning this move for more than a year and it finally happened :)

Thanks for your support all these years, I just want to say that a sale wasn't just a sale to me, it meant a lot more. Thank you for trusting an online stranger to make your accessories, you made me believe in myself too. Thanks too for putting up with my long order processing time. Over the years, I had the most wonderful customers, thanks for your repeat purchases and some who gave me gifts in return too!

This little shop has been part of my life for so long, it was bittersweet to clean up my worktable and pack up all my materials into storage. If you would like to keep in touch, my personal Instagram is @meliameis although I doubt I will update often (I'm not very into social media haha).

So, I guess that's all for now....
Thank you very very very much for everything.

God bless!

Customization: Anthony

A bracelet and earrings set customized by Anthony for his girlfriend.
She likes red but doesn't want it to be too striking in colour when it comes to her accessories.
As such, we decided to keep the red to just the focal piece- a salmon red Swarovski heart (official name: Padparadscha) and the bicone bead at the tail end.
The rest of the bracelet is made of shades of white and cream, with a touch of light amethyst here and there.

We worked on a pair of matching earrings as well, design is minimal so as not to clash with the chunkier bracelet.
Sparkly dangly crystals with the same padparadscha Swarovski hearts.

14k: Edge

Here's one with cool metallic shades, contrary to the sweet style I usually favour.
The colours are uncommon too- a hint of violet and purple, a dash of blue greens, and a splash of silver.
No rounds beads are used here, only faceted ones to maximize on 'edginess'.

Turquoise-Silver Helix Crystal Bead
Metallic Silver Faceted Round Crystal Bead
Purple Violet Flat Wheel Crystal Bead

14k: Gatsby

Gatsby... brings to mind rich, gold, flamboyant, glitz & glam.
This piece attempts to capture all these with the rich ruby lampwork glass beads, cotton shell pearls, glass crystals in champagne and maroon, and an alabaster white oval with tiny facets.
But these alone wouldn't do, aye? Gatsby gotta be eye-catching and a little over-the-top too ;) Hence I adorned it with a dome bead connected to gold chain tassels.
Lots of details going on in a bracelet, including the gold accents in between the beads, perfect for those who like bling bling that stands out.

Ruby Lampwork Glass Bead

Champagne Flat Wheel Crystal Bead
Opal Pink Doughnut Crystal Bead
Clear AB, Maroon AB, Peach Rivoli Crystal Bead
Alabaster White Faceted Oval Crystal Bead

14k: Regal

I rarely use maroon in my pieces, and when I do, it mostly served as an accompaniment colour, subtle in the background.
This time round, I made it the focal colour, as I find it pairs very well with gold accents, in that the gold takes this unassuming colour to a new level of elegance.
Particularly, the 2 gold lantern balls help to direct the focus towards the middle, culminating with a dangling maroon heart crystal.
But don't worry, that's not to say that the sides were designed with less thought :) White pearls and opal pinks stacked together with gold hematite spacers are another feature that I love.

Material
Maroon, Opal Pink Faceted Round Crystal Bead
Matte Beige Doughnut Crystal Bead
White Freshwater Pearl
Clear AB, Light Violet AB, Light Amethyst, Violet AB Rivoli Crystal Bead
Pastel Pink Flower Acrylic Bead
Maroon Heart Crystal Bead
Light Pink Helix Crystal Bead
Gold Plated Hematite Spacer Bead
14k-plated Lantern Ball Bead

14k: Icicles

With the white squares mimicking ice cubes in the sea of icy blues, I reckon naming this 'Icicles' is an apt choice.
Nothing but good quality glass crystals are used in this piece, which means that the beads are sparkly at all angles.
For those who can't get enough of blues, check out the rivoli triplets- featuring aqua, electric and light denim blues!

Baby Blue Diagonal Cube Crystal Bead

14k: Juiced

Juicy in yellow & green!
But I didn't want to go overly bright and loud with this (let's keep it for next time...), hence I chose mint chalcedony stones as the main beads to tone it down.
Added chrysanthemum design bead caps for an extra dose of sunshine joy.
Overall, a bright cheery piece that I hope makes you smile whenever you see it :)
